With dinner over, Gordon began to press Chris again for answers and a plan to get his car back.
“Tomorrow, you’re going to take me to see George,” Gordon ordered.
“Let me explain what’s happening here first,” Chris pleaded.
“I’m all ears,” Gordon said.
Anne came behind Gordon, took his plate and gasped. “You didn’t eat the roast.”
“I’m not hungry,” Gordon grumbled.
“You too?” Anne commented, taking Brittany’s plate.
“Listen, honey, you don’t have to worry about slender looks anymore. Thank God those days are gone,” Ann joked.
“Are you vegetarians?” Anne asked.
Not wishing to discuss meaningless things, Gordon ignored her and said, “Please, Chris, explain.”
Rebuffed, Anne piled the plates and stormed off to the kitchen. Under her breath she muttered, “That leaves more for us then, ungrateful…”
“When everything stopped, I was with my cousin. We used to work together. Our first few days were horrible because we were stuck almost a hundred miles from home, north of Redding. It was truly terrible; I haven’t seen people act like that before,” Chris said, pausing briefly as he recalled the memory. “You know what it’s like out there, it’s simply horrible.”
Gordon nodded.
“Fast-forward a few days and we were stuck in the mountain pass. We were tired, hungry and desperate to get back to our families.” Chris paused again.
Anne came from the kitchen and walked over to Chris. She placed her arm around him and began to massage his shoulders.
“I’ve never seen my cousin act so viciously, but what I saw him do was beyond anything I could have imagined. He saw a young family; they had a truck and were scavenging for food at a gas station. He went to ask for help, but it was a ruse. He hit the father in the head with a pipe and then took out his rage against the mother; the poor children didn’t stand a chance.”
Gordon interrupted and asked, “He murdered them?”
“Yes, but that wasn’t the worst of it,” Chris lamented.
“What could be worse?” Brittany asked.
Tyler suddenly appeared. “Mom, is there dessert?”
The timing was the perfect way for Chris to stop talking and he took it. “Yes, there is. Anne, do you want to get the kids their treat?”
“Why, of course I do,” Anne chirped and headed towards the kitchen. In a flash, she returned with two packages of chocolate pudding cups.
“Yum, pudding!” Tyler squealed happily. He grabbed the pudding cup and turned.
“Hold on, what do you say?” Brittany scolded.
Tyler stopped, turned and said, “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome. Tell the others to come get theirs,” Anne asked.
Tyler nodded and raced off.
“In a nutshell, your cousin is a savage and murderer,” Gordon stated.
“Exactly.”
“So he won’t listen to reason?”
“Precisely,” Chris answered.
Gordon thought and said, “I know men like him, I’ve dealt with them before, and there’s only one way you can negotiate with them.”
“How’s that?” Andy asked.
Gordon leaned forward and said, “By putting a bullet in their heads.”
